Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the audition process work?
A: Auditions are done in a group setting. We do not do individual auditions, and you will not be asked to play a prepared solo. On auditions day when we get to the point of setting the drumline, we will take each section out on its own and decide in a group setting who will be on what instrument.

Q: Do you have any summer camps:
A: Yes, we have a percussion pre-camp in July to get people ready for the audition process.

Q: Do I have to audition for the pre-camp?
A: No way. The pre-camp is created to prepare people for the actual audition process that happens within the first few days of band camp (which is usually about one week before school starts).

Q: What will the auditions be based on?
A: All auditions are based on technique, sound quality, and will be implemented in the warmup exercises provided in the auditions section of this site.

Q: Specifically, what kind of sticks do the snares use?
A: In 2008, the snareline used Innovative Percussion FS-JC (Jim Casella) model sticks.

Q: How big is the drumline:
A: The drumline's size is determined by the amount of players that audition each section and the ability of those players.

Q: Do you actually use tri-toms?
A: Yes, we do have a tri-tom line. In 2001, we had 12 snares, 7 quads, 8 basses, and 12 cymbals. We couldn't make those lines any bigger, so we decided to add a tri-tom section. The voicing fits in between the basses and quads. An additional benefit is that we can have a high and a low tenor voicing that can compliment each other.
